  Diploma in Teaching in the Lifelong Learning Sector (Level 5)

The diploma in Teaching in the Lifelong Learning Sector is designed for those already in a full teaching role as defined by DIUS regulations, 2007, or intending to enter the profession in that role. The qualification is appropriate for teachers, tutors and trainers who may be working within an FE college, Adult and Community Learning Centre or Learning provider and for those delivering work based training such as within voluntary, community, private and public organizations. Those who achieve this qualification can use it to claim Qualified Teacher Learning Skills statues (QTLS).
The diploma gives the learner the underpinning knowledge, understanding and skills needed in order to effectively fulfil the full teacher role. This includes the planning and delivering of schemes of work and sessions, exploring a range of different teaching and learning strategies, curriculum development, assessment practice and professional development.
Teaching practice is a requirement of this qualification.

Entry requirements

Candidates should hold one of the following:
    • A first degree.
    • A professional qualification.
    • Relevant industrial /commercial experience at practitioner level.

In addition to that, candidates must also:

    • Have a relevant vocational/academic qualification of at least the level above that of their learners and at least a minimum Level 3 qualification in your area of specialism.
    • Be able to read and communicate clearly and accurately enough to meet the requirements of the training and assessment tasks of each unit.
    • Not have a criminal background which might prevent them from working as a teacher with young people or vulnerable adults.

A minimum of hours of teaching practice is required for the diploma; therefore, it is necessary to ensure that you have access to this amount of teaching practice

Qualification structure

The course is split into two parts with a total of 120 credits as follows:

Part one (60 credits)

1. Preparing to teach in the lifelong sector.
2. Planning and Enabling Learning.
3. Enabling Learning and Assessment.
4. Theories and Principles of Planning and enabling Learning.
5. Inclusive Practice.

Part two (60 credits)

6. Continuing Personal and Professional Development.
7. Curriculum Development for inclusive Practice.
8. Wider Professional Practice.
9. Reflective Professional Practice Skills.

QTLS

Successful completion of the Diploma allows the candidate to be eligible to claim Qualified Teacher, Learning and Skills Status (QTLS).
